The heart of DISINI is a quirky pavilion titled Nenas Estate (pineapple estate), designed by independent fashion collective, MASH-UP. It is a sculpture and outdoor pavilion; a functional venue for talks, workshops and music. Like an amphitheatre, it provides a twofold perspective - sitting within and looking outwards, and peering in from the outside. It pays homage to a pineapple-shaped playground, formerly located at Tampines Central Park.
Nenas Estate activates ideas within the landscapes around Gillman Barracks. The pineapple, considered to bring prosperity in Chinese beliefs, connects to the site of Haw Par Villa while water motifs speak of the sea and Sentosa island. This ‘mash-up’ of an underwater heartland-neighbourhood embodies the festival vision and bold aesthetic of a fashion collective.
